10 Everyday Habits That Quietly Drain Your Bank Account

Part 4 of 5 · 2 minute read

7. Grocery brand loyalty

Store-brand products are often made in the same factories as the big names and sell for 20 to 40 percent less. Staples such as rice, flour, pasta, tinned tomatoes, cleaning products, and over-the-counter painkillers are the easiest swaps, because the recipes are standardised and the difference is mostly the label.

Do this today: swap five staples to the store brand on your next shop. If you cannot tell the difference, keep the swap. Most people keep four out of five.

8. Phantom power and old bulbs

Devices on standby, chargers left plugged in all day, and old incandescent bulbs quietly add to every electricity bill. None of them cost much on their own. Together they can be a noticeable slice of your annual bill, and unlike most savings on this list, the fixes are one-time: do them once and they keep paying.

Do this today: replace your three most-used bulbs with LEDs, put the TV and games gear on a switchable power strip, and turn your water heater down a few degrees. You will not notice the difference. Your bill will.
