10 Everyday Habits That Quietly Drain Your Bank Account

Part 5 of 5 · 2 minute read

9. Late fees and missed due dates

A single late payment on a card or utility bill can cost $25 to $40 in fees, and a late card payment can also dent your credit score, which makes everything you borrow later more expensive. Most late payments are not about money. They are about forgetting, and forgetting is fixable.

Do this today: set every bill to autopay at least the minimum, and add a calendar reminder three days before each due date. You can always pay more by hand; autopay just guarantees you are never late.

10. Having no emergency buffer

Without savings, every surprise becomes debt: the car repair goes on the card, the vet bill becomes a loan, and the interest is the real drain. Even a small buffer breaks this cycle. The goal is not to be rich. The goal is to stop paying interest on bad luck.

Do this today: open a separate savings account and move $20 into it before you close this page. Then follow the 90-day plan below to grow it to $1,000.
